Independent Media

********Page under construction*********

Below is our annotated list of independent media contacts. The contacts are split between independent news sources (put first) and independent magazines (following news sources). We would suggest sending press releases to the first set of contacts and perhaps sending full length articles to the other contacts. With each contact you will generally find our opinion on the source and info on how to submit news or articles to it. We put independent media sources on or close the route first, followed by regional then national outlets. Click on the links below for a ‘non-annotated’ list of media contacts or a print friendly version of our annotated list. Please feel free to email i69media@yahoo.com with any questions about the information on this page.

Independent Media Outlets on the Route:

Bloomington:

News-

  • Roadblock Report- bi-weekly newsletter put out by the I-69 Media Office, produced in Bloomington and distributed all over the route. Electronic copies of past issues can be found on the resources page of stopi69.wordpress.com. Email roadblockreport@yahoo.com if you want to get involved in the project, have story ideas, or want to give criticisms of past issues.
  • The Bloomington Alternative- although its no longer a print publication, it has a huge online readership in Bloomington and the surrounding area. The coverage of past actions has been very favorable and has included lots of visual content. Probably a good choice to do an interview with, as they haven’t been known to print things out of context. Email editor@bloomingtonalternative.com with your press release.
  • WFHB Community Radio- very good source for in depth stories as well as quick ‘headline’ coverage. Runs a daily local news shows that have played upwards of 15 minuets of action audio at a time in the past. Very responsible with interview material and respectful of security culture issues (names for example). Email news@wfhb.org with your press release.

Magazines

  • Ryder- an independent arts and culture magazine that prints a monthly schedule of film showings in Bloomington. The magazine might print a longer piece about an action, but probably not a ’strictly news’ piece. Give it a shot at theryder@theryder.com
  • Green Dove- peace website in Bloomington with lots of links and such to peace activities and groups. Puts together Green Dove Magazine. Peaceful stories about I-69 actions might make it….email submissions@greendove.net or check out http://www.greendove.net/imagesandwordssubmission.htm for their submission guidelines.
  • Bloom- independent culture and arts magazine in Bloomington. Probably won’t print anything I-69 related unless its an interesting story to yuppies. Email editor@magbloom.com if you want

Indianapolis:

News

Magazines

  • Branches- an alternative magazine published in Indy, but distributed further south along the route as well. Not really sure how they would be about printing I-69 stuff, their readership and content tends to be more ‘new age-ish”. Worth a shot in some instances, editor@branches.com or apples@branches.com

Independent Media Outlets off the Route:

News

  • Infoshop- very easy self publishing news site. Generally updated multiple times a day. Can put up pictures and comments. A lot of stuff about I-69 that has been posted on infoshop has been reposted on hundreds of different website. Good for immediate call outs or action reports that ask for some sort of response. Go to news.infoshop.org to see the news site or http://news.infoshop.org/submit.php?type=story to submit a news story
  • IndyMedia- as well, a very easy self-publishing news site, with an international site (http://www.indymedia.org/en/index.shtml), an overall U.S. site (http://indymedia.us/en/index.shtml) and a large number of regional U.S. sites. Of particular interest to the I-69 campaign are the IMC at Urbana-Champagne (http://www.ucimc.org/), which has said they would print all I-69 related stories, Chicago IMC (http://chicago.indymedia.org/), as there are lots of I-69 opponents working in Chicago, and Portland IMC (http://portland.indymedia.org/), which has consistently printed I-69 action reports. To submit news in IMC sites, look on the left hand side bard or a banner across the top of the page that says “submit news” or “publish”. To submit a proposal for a “features” article on the main IndyMedia U.S. site, send a story to imc-us-editorial@lists.indymedia.org , in the subject line put “Proposal for Features Article: _____(your title)”, in the body of the email put “Header: _____(time and place, short title)” “Title: _____(full title)” “Abstract:______(about 5 lines worth of info and any relevant links)” “Body: ______(full story)” “Links: ______(any relevant links regarding the info in the story)” and “Picture Links:______(any links that link to pictures that you want included in the story)”. Most stories that are features on the main U.S. page will get syndicated on most of the regional pages as well.
  • Anarchist News- again, very easy self-publishing site. Less traffic than infoshop or the indymedia sites, but still a good place to post whatever your putting up on the those sites. Submission can be done at http://www.anarchistnews.org/?q=node/add/story , you can read the stories at http://www.anarchistnews.org/
  • Mostly Water- a self-publishing and syndicating site. Has run a lot of I-69 articles in the past. Submit stories at http://mostlywater.org/node/add/news, read stories at http://mostlywater.org
  • Narco News- tends to be more focused on things happening in Mexico, Central, and South America, but regularly prints things about the U.S. as well. They have a self-publishing section, but it’s relatively complicated, so only if you have the time. However, if you write a piece particularly focused on the NAFTA Superhighway aspect of I-69, then it might get published on the main page. Write narconews@gmail.com or chris@narconews.com, check out http://narconews.com to view stories.
  • SchNEWS- a weekly publication out of Britain. Wouldn’t send them ever press release, but anything spectacular or out of the ordinary might make it. Send stuff to schnews@brighton.co.uk
  • Earth First! News- a news site that runs mostly environmental stories, updates periodically. NOT to be confused with the Earth First! Journal (see below). Send stories to greg7@earthfirst.org, read stories at http://www.earthfirstnews.com/
  • A-infos- a news service “by, for, and about anarchists”. Don’t really have much info on their submission policies or procedures, but certainly that can be found on their website, http://www.ainfos.ca/

Other Mediums

  • Earth First! Journal- has been very willing in the past to print both lengthy and short action report-type articles. Their deadlines are generally long before the printing (which happens every two months), so articles that don’t have super time sensitive content make more sense. Email collective@earthfirstjournal.org with story ideas (better idea first) or full length stories.
  • Counter Punch- liberal as shit, but has printed lengthy I-69 articles in the past, particularly on the website. Email counterpunch@counterpunch.org if you want to try it.
  • Dissent- pretty scholarly type journal, might be interested in something such as movement analysis focused on I-69. Email submissions@dissentmagazine.org., but check out their guidelines here, as they are pretty specific.
  • E Magazine- also liberal as shit, but would be a good outlet for short articles that are specific to the environmental concerns surrounding I-69. Submission policies here, email them to jimm@emagazine.com and kmangan@emagazine.com
  • In These Times- might be interested in printing something about the I-69 movement and its relationship to a wider struggle, but probably not short ‘news-y’ pieces. Submit stuff here
  • Labor Notes- specific to issues of labor, but might run a piece focusing on the NAFTA aspect of I-69. Email chris@labornotes.org with a story idea.
  • Critical Moment- has run I-69 intro pieces in the recent past; might run follow up info or longer pieces. Email submissions@criticalmoment.org
  • Adbuster- magazine dealing mostly with media and consumerism issues. Might be interested in a piece regarding the media’s portrayal of the campaign or an introductory piece about the types of actions (particularly fancy ones) that take place in the campaign. Check here for their submission guidelines.
